Cowan began his career at CBS News in 1988 as a researcher for CBS News Nightwatch and CBS News Evening News and was based in Washington DC. From there he served at KIEM-TV, an NBC affiliate in Eureka, California as a news director and anchor.

Cowan had also worked at KCOY-TV as weekend anchor in Santa Maria, California. He helped Launch a noon broadcast at the station and was one of most watched by then. Later, he joined WWMT-TV in Kalamazoo, Michigan and there he served as anchor and reporter.

Cowan also worked at WLWT-TV, an NBC affiliate in Cincinnati where he was anchor and reporter. In 1996 he was hired as correspondent for CBS Newspath and later was correspondent for CBS News Based in New York and Dallas. He Joined NBC News in 2007 and as a correspondent, he contributed to platforms like Nightly News and Today.
