When Melvin was a High School student, he worked with WIS TV an NBC affiliate as our generation reporter program. After completing his University studies, he returned to WIS TV as a news photographer and producer. He rose in rank to become the station’s morning news reporter and later became an anchor.

He left WIS TV on July 2008 for WRC TV owned and operated by NBC in Washington DC to anchor weekend Evening Newscasts. Melvin left the station in 2011 to join MSNBC as an anchor and also contribute to NBC News as a reporter. He succeeded Jose Diaz Balart as the anchor of MSNBC live which became MSNBC reports on 2016. The next year, he hosted true crime series on Dateline named secrets uncovered which premiered on Oxygen on 2021. On 2018 he was promoted to anchor weekday news on Today and formed the casts of hosts heading today third hour. Melvin left MSNBC job to focus on the Today show.
