As a student Zeleny, interned for the following Newspapers; The Wall Street Journal, Florida Times Union, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. After graduating in 1996, he was hired by the Des Moines Register, a daily morning newspaper, at Des Moines Lowa. He worked until 2000 when he left for The Chicago Tribune, where he covered the 2000 and 2004 presidential campaign.
In 2006, he joined The New York Times, a daily newspaper in New York City as a politics lead reporter and covered the 2012 presidential elections. There he worked for nearly 7 years before leaving for ABC News. At ABC News he worked as Senior Washington Correspondent until 2015 when he joined CNN. AT CNN he has served as Senior Washington correspondent, in 2017 he became the senior White House Correspondent before being the Chief National affairs correspondent in 2021. He has covered the 2016 presidential elections, the 2018 and the 2020.
